FMCSA Overhauls CSA Safety Measurement System with New Compliance Categories
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is set to enhance its Safety Measurement System (SMS) by replacing the original Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASICs) with updated “compliance categories.” Notably, the Controlled Substances/Alcohol violations, previously a standalone category, will be integrated into the Unsafe Driving compliance category. These modifications aim to focus FMCSA’s investigative resources on carriers with higher crash rates and provide more specific information to help motor carriers and enforcement pinpoint unsafe driver behavior and sources of vehicle maintenance issues.
