Elevating Safety Standards Through Excellence
The National Tank Truck Carriers (NTTC) North American Safety Contest is a prestigious competition recognizing excellence in safety among tank truck operations across North America. The contest culminates in the awarding of the Heil Trophy to the safest carriers in three divisions: Harvison (over 15 million miles), Sutherland (under 15 million miles), and Private Fleet.
Eligibility Criteria
To participate in the NTTC North American Safety Contest, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Membership: Be a for-hire tank truck carrier or a private fleet member in good standing with the NTTC.
- Mileage Reporting: Provide accurate mileage data, now determined using electronic data sources such as Safety Measurement System (SMS) or Electronic Logging Devices (ELD), replacing the previous reliance on International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) reports.
- Safety Performance: Demonstrate superior safety records, with awards recognizing carriers that have the fewest accidents per million miles within their mileage class.
- Application Process: Submit applications within the designated timelines for each round of the contest.
Contest Structure
The contest is conducted in two rounds:
- Round 1: Carriers compete within their mileage classes, and awards are given in three categories: Grand, Honor, and Merit.
- Round 2: Grand Award winners from Round 1 advance to compete for the Heil Trophy in their respective divisions:
- Harvison Division: For-hire carriers with over 15 million miles.
- Sutherland Division: For-hire carriers with under 15 million miles.
- Private Fleet Division: Private fleet carriers.
Application Timeline
For the 2024 contest cycle, the key dates are:
- January 2, 2026: Round 1 applications open.
- January 29, 2026: Round 1 application deadline.
- February 19, 2026: Round 1 winners announced.
- February 20, 2026: Round 2 applications open.
- March 5, 2026: Round 2 application deadline.
- April 21–24, 2026: Winners announced at the NTTC Annual Conference in Tampa, Florida.
