Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for the National Safety Director of the Year Award, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Membership: Be a member of both the American Trucking Associations and its Safety Management Council.
- Professional Role: Hold a policymaking position with full-time responsibility for directing safety activities within a motor carrier organization.
- Experience: Have a minimum of 10 years dedicated to the field of highway and/or industrial safety, with at least 5 consecutive years in a leadership role overseeing safety programs.
These criteria ensure that the award recognizes seasoned professionals who have made substantial, long-term contributions to safety in the trucking industry.
Application Process
The application process for the award is comprehensive, designed to evaluate the candidate’s qualifications thoroughly:

Nomination: Candidates can be nominated by themselves or by others within the industry.

Documentation: Applicants must compile a detailed binder that includes:
• Certificates and licenses
• Photographs of safety initiatives
• Published articles or papers
• Safety program manuals
• Records of safety achievements and innovations -
Presentation: The quality and organization of the submission are critical. Materials should be neatly arranged, with each section clearly labeled, to facilitate the evaluation process.

Judging: A panel comprising government officials and law enforcement personnel reviews the submissions, assessing the candidates’ impact on safety within their organizations and the broader industry.
The award winner receives a $5,000 check and a commemorative ring, presented at the ATA Safety, Security & Human Resources National Conference & Exhibition.
