Last Year’s Stats – Brake Safety Week 2023-2024

Brake Safety Week Chart Stats 2023-2024

Brake Safety Week Comparison: 2023 and 2024 inspection results show consistent out-of-service rates due to brake violations, highlighting ongoing safety challenges in commercial fleets.

In May 2023, CVSA conducted a surprise Brake Blitz, inspecting 18,875 vehicles. A total of 2,375 vehicles (12.6%) were placed out of service due to brake-related violations, a rate very similar to the 2024 findings.

Top issues included:

  • Steering axle brake violations: 295 vehicles (12.4%)
  • Stand-alone brake violations: 1,127 vehicles (47.5%)
  • Vehicles exceeding 20% defective brakes: 1,394 vehicles (58.7%)

The 2023 campaign focused on brake lining and pad violations, with the following results:

  • Contaminated linings and pads: 40.03%
  • Cracked or voided linings and pads: 28.74%
  • Loose or missing linings and pads: 10.70%
  • Worn linings and pads: 20.53%

Looking Ahead to Brake Safety Week 2026

The next Brake Safety Week is scheduled for August 24 to 30, 2026. This year’s inspections will focus on brake drums and rotors, which are critical components. If damaged, they can reduce braking efficiency and pose serious safety risks by creating road debris hazards.

Safety First – Prepare for Inspection

Remind drivers to always perform pre- and post-trip inspections with caution. Just because the tractor-trailer is not in motion doesn’t mean its risk-free.

If possible, find a flat surface to park before the inspection. Experts suggest placing blocks or chocks around the drive tires for added stability.

Before Brake Safety Week, evaluate your fleet’s equipment with the following concerns.

  • How would a 12.6% fleet shutdown impact my company in terms of:
    • Operating Revenue
    • Mileage Loss
    • Breakdown/Hotel Pay
    • Maintenance costs
    • Fines/Citations
    • Vehicle Maintenance BASIC
  • Does your fleet know what to look for?
    • Chaffing or rubbing airlines
    • Hose diameter reduction due to wear
    • Damaged, missing, or broken components
    • Brake pad and lining measurements
    • Cracked or contaminated pads or lining
    • Excessive camshaft movement
    • Rust or cracks on drum due to inoperative brakes
    • Rust/holes in brake chamber
    • Audible air leaks in the emergency brake
    • How to measure the pushrod

If your fleet has not been properly trained and familiar with these procedures, you could be facing some serious downtime if they fail inspection.Safety First – Prepare for Inspection INFINITI Fleet Safety Training can help you.
